River Art

(click to big)
So I'm having a beer with an old river running buddy, and he says: "If you're really a Boatman on The Canyon, then you have a piece of artwork given to you by a passenger."
I said: "yup. I have one."
This is a painting by my dear friend Bex Deluxe, that hangs proudly on my wall.

San Juan Pics

Another fine San Juan river trip in the books. A wonderful time, although the weather did try to put up a challenge at first. We got hit with possibly the heaviest monsoon hail storm I've ever seen with a mile left to row to our first camp. After persevering through it, we had wonderful weather the rest of the trip. The boats performed marvelously, the people were delightful (the ladies in the mud fight above were a blast), and the food was delicious.
I'm ready to go back.

River Time

The river is calling, and I must answer.

There are boats that need to be rowed, and rapids needing running.

Inspiration

Busy organizing gear for the upcoming river trip, so here's a pic to inspire me.

River Trip in One Week

One week from today, I'll be launching my raft on the San Juan river. This makes me very happy, but now I have to get all my gear organized. Where did I put that patch kit?

Flooding the Big Ditch

As a sometimes canyon boatman, I'm quite interested in the result of the 2008 flooding experiment. Well, the results are in, and they're a mix of positive and negative:

The experimental flood of March 2008 in the Grand Canyon has yielded two main findings: The high water worked well in building sandbars as hoped, but they weren't lasting.

The flood released twice as much water as normal down the Colorado River for 60 hours that spring, and it created large stockpiles of sand that had accumulated in a few major tributaries.

Researchers with a branch of the U.S. Geological Survey in Flagstaff say the flood was successful in expanding the sandbars used by river runners for camping, which also form backwaters that possibly help young and endangered fish survive.

It's something of a hot issue because these beaches have been shrinking in recent years, and vegetation has been spreading over much of what remains, making camping less available.

"By October 2008, six months after the high-flow experiment, the new sandbars had been largely eroded by typical fluctuating-flow dam operations," researchers wrote in a brief paper.

Releases from the dam are increased and decreased, within limits, to meet hydropower demands from customers in six states.

The bigger question is whether the Colorado River system through the Grand Canyon can be kept static or gain sand instead of continuing to lose its beaches and sandbars.

"It may not be possible to rebuild and maintain sandbars over the long run solely through the manipulation of Glen Canyon Dam operations," the researchers posit in a fact sheet on the subject.

That's because about 90 percent of all sand that once flowed through the Canyon now winds up behind Glen Canyon Dam, said Ted Melis, deputy chief of the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center at USGS.

Similar to the results of the flooding of 1996 and 2004, the benefits are only temporary. Which points to the need to repeat the floodings in order to maintain a healthy ecosystem in the Grand Canyon.

And I'm hoping to get my raft there this spring for a personal inspection.

Can I Fast Forward To Spring?

Looks like we'll be getting a little more snow this weekend. I suppose I shouldn't complain, since I live in a place where winter happens. But I got a new river supply catalog (also known as "porno-for-boatmen") in yesterday's mail, so I'm fantasizing about white water and warm sunshine. And wishing I had more money for new toys (that I don't really need). Oh well, the more snow in the winter, the more white water in spring.

The Owl I Saw

Appears to be a Saw-Whet Owl.
The story: Late on the second night of the trip, I awoke with a need to urinate (the predictable result of drinking beer by the campfire prior to crawling into my sleeping bag). I opened my tent flap, and this little guy was sitting on a branch about ten feet away (those are my river pants drying out in the branch to the left). Luckily, I was able to reach my camera and snap a couple of pics before he/she flew away, even though I was too 'pressured' to get a good focus. 'Twas a unique incident on the trip.

Back in Civilization

I'm back. Nine days away from civilization can be quite refreshing, but nine days on the river is even beyond that. I am rather tired, however. I'll try to post more pics and stories soon.
Damn, what are all those people doing out there?

River Trip Time

Tomorrow morning, I depart on a nine day trip on the San Juan river. My first major river trip since breaking my humerus, and I'm really looking forward to it. Packing for the trip has been a challenge, as we're trying to travel light due to low water but also be prepared for all the various weather that October brings. Over the course of nine days, it's gonna get cold.

During my absence I hope that Sweaterman will throw up a few posts. He's been up to some interesting activities over the past month, and I hope he'll share them with you.

Whitewater is calling me, and I must be on the river.

A Couple More Pics

A couple more from the Pagosa/Animas trip. Because they make me happy.

Can't wait to do it again.

Last Weekend

A quick pic from last weekend's river play. We ran the Pagosa Springs stretch of the San Juan on Saturday, and the Animas on Sunday. That's me and Zymurgian in the front of the raft on the Saturday run. No big challenges on either run, but it was enough to test my shoulder and great to be back on the water.

Animas Bound

Leaving in the morning for Durango, CO, for Animas River Days. ARD is more of a "river party" than a serious whitewater river trip, but since it's my first time out since breaking the shoulder I'm looking forward to a challenge. If nothing else, it feels like I'm starting to break away from physical restrictions, step by step. I think I know what I'm doing (don't we all), but there is the chance that the shoulder could fail me. During today's physical therapy I did a bunch of tests, and my right side has less than 50% of the strength of my left (making me a left-winger) on most of them. Pain is still a part of any thing I do using my right arm. But I've made so much progress over the past few months that my therapist's words were "go for it" and "50% of your baseline is stronger than most people will ever be" (yeah, I used to be pretty solid), and I really need some whitewater to nurture my soul. So, fornicate the risk, I'm doing it.
I'll try to get a Boobie up before I leave in the morning, but otherwise I'll see you next week.

Late River Pic

I usually put up a river pic on Saturday, but I was busy yesterday. So here's a pic from the San Juan, just a day late. Wish I were there today.

Anti-Depressant

OK, that last post was too depressing. So here's another photo of a cliff dwelling that Zymurgian snapped on his San Juan trip last week. (Yes, he should post his own damned photos, but I haven't transferred them to his computer yet).

From Zymurgian's Trip

From the upper San Juan, a nice view of a cliff dwelling.

Where Zymurgian is

I'm slightly jealous. Zymurgian is off boating the San Juan river. He's got my camera with him, so I hope to have some new river pics coming.

Uplifting

I need something to lift my spirits.

Me. Rowing. On the San Juan.

I needed that.
